Last Sunday my daughter Debbie and me held our annual Vegan Café at our house and it was not only a very lovely afternoon with friends, delicious food, and live music – but we were also able to make a little money which we are going to donate to the local animal shelter. Thank you for helping us with this project! xx

Extra sweet potato curry

When you have to cook for children AND adults it is often hard to find something everybody likes so we often have to prepare different meal for our beloved family members.

Today I thought that something sweet might be suitable as it has been really cold the whole week and the children are having a short end of term break here in Germany.

Most children like potatoes if yours do not then you can take pasta, I guess. I cooked the potato curry in one pan and prepared some extra (hot & spicy) veggies for the grown ups in another pan.

This is my recipe for the extra sweet POTATO CURRY

1 kg potatoes peeled and diced

1 l water

1/2 cube vegetable stock

50 gr red lentils

1 small onion

1 small clove of garlic

400 gr pineapples diced

1/2 bell pepper

1/2 can coconut milk

2 tb sp maple syrup

1 tb sp curcuma

a pinch of salt

Please feel free to replace any vegetables your child doesn´ t like with some they do like e.g. carrots, fennel, etc

First cook the potatoes with the stock, lentils, onion, bell pepper, and garlic for 20 min.

Then add the other ingredients and let it simmer for another 15 min.

Enjoy your healthy meal!

If your child still doesn’t´t want try it, put it all in a blender and serve as potato mash.

For the hot and spicy veg take a bag of frozen mixed vegetables and cook them with stock, onions, garlic, salt, and add chilli sauce to your gusto.

October Goals

October Goals

Another year of life has ended, a new one just begun .. For me that is a good time to think about what you achieved in the past year and – much more important – what your goals for the next year are.

Of course it is my aim to become a full time artist and make a living just by doing what I love but that takes a lot of focus and hard work. I have now been working as a freelancer for exactly 20 years with my translation/ tuition business so I know what I am talking about. But I am definitely willing to commit to some hard work and that is why I am taking lots of online courses in order to become the best me I can be.

At the moment I am taking the very enjoyable “Ever After 2016” course by Willowing. In this course you learn a lot of different mixed media techniques by a couple of high class artists. The topic is fairy tales and you get twelve different lessons so in the end you could fill a whole calendar with your paintings. I have already shown you some of my creations in my last blog post, today I can show you my version of the “Frog Prince” 🙂

Next Monday the “Do what you love” course by Beth Kempton will start and I am very much looking forward to that because the course focuses on lots of different areas of your life and you can learn a lot about yourself and your hidden possibilities. Maybe you need to clear out your closets at home and get rid of all the unwanted clutter before you are able become a successful business woman. These kind of courses always inspire me a lot and I tend to find solutions for minor problems. I will let you know about my progress.

What else am I working on at the moment? I am still working on my vegan recipe illustrations for “They draw and cook” and am always happy when they add my works to their website. This was the last one that was added.

So my creative goals are to make the most of my courses, to learn a lot, and to improve my style.

Of course I also want to become the best version of myself possible so I decided to do a three week detox challenge with my good friend Marion. I will tell you about the outcome in November. My plan is to improve my acid-base balance and to exercise a lot. So in addition to the four yoga classes I already teach per week I will invest some time in extra lessons for myself. Hopefully my cunning plan will work out fine. The detox of the body is supposed to clear the mind as well and thus give me the chance to see where I can up my game.

Utterly delicious Pumpkin soup

So it is finally Autumn – my favourite season! Not only because I am born in October but also because I love foggy cold morning walks, warm sunny afternoons, and cosy evenings by candlelight.

I also love pumpkins, so today I want to share with you my very easy pumpkin soup recipe.

First you will need a pumpkin.img_3963

Today I used a little organic Hokkaido. You just have to chop it into little dices about 3 cm wide. Put them on a baking tray and season them generously with your favourite spices. I used salt, pepper, garlic powder, turmeric, paprika, and some chilli powder. Now sprinkle the dices with olive oil. Roast them in the oven for about 30 minutes at 180 ° C.

Bring 2 l of water to the boil, add one or two vegetable stock cubes. Stir well until they are fully dissolved. Add the roasted pumpkin and blend in the pot. Alternatively you can blend the pumpkin first and add to the soup. Cook for 5 minutes, then turn off the heat. Now add the coconut milk or alpro soya cuisine or any other cream alternative of your choice. Stir well and enjoy!  img_3966

That was quick! Roasting the pumpkin in the oven until it is tender makes all the difference! Bon appetit!

By the way Turmeric is truly a superfood and you should use it more often. It decreases your risk for cancer, is anti-inflammatory, supports detoxification, balances your blood sugar, and even helps improving your cognitive functions

Now I have been a vegan for 5 years, time really flies .. I vividly remember writing

Now I have been a vegan for 4 years, yay!

Well, what has happened since then? What has changed within the last 5 years?

For one thing it is more common now to eat vegan food. Lots of restaurants here in the beautiful city of Oldenburg offer vegan options now while 5 years ago they would just look at you and ask: But you eat fish, right?

And friends don´t panic when you are coming to dinner – by now they know that you can eat “only” vegetables.

So where do I go when I would like to eat out?

Well, I really like Peter Pane – formerly known as “Hans im Glück. They offer 4 kinds of vegan burgers even one without bread which is great at night when you don´t want to many carbs.

Then we have got the Veggiemaid Snackbar which offers a great brunch at the weekends.

When I am on a shopping tour in the city I like to stop at Woyton for a matcha soy latte and / or a vegan bagel.

Of course, there are lots of other great locations in the city but in Summer it is nicer to take a short drive to  the lovely Beachclub Nether where you can sit and watch the wakeboarders do their tricks until sunset while enjoying a Beck´s blue and a blindside burger.

A little bit further North on the North Sea coast you can find Sonnendeck Dangast but I have told you about it before. 🙂

Vegan Travelling: Day trips to Hamburg and Dangast

Shopping food gets easier, too. Not only Denn´s Biomarkt but also Edeka, Rewe, Netto, Aldi, even Real offer a wide choice of vegan / organic options.

Although I still like to order some things (like heavy 10 kilo bags of dogfood) at Alles vegetarisch a great online store with an enormous range of articles.

Yes, you heard right, the dog has become a vegan, too. Good old Romeo has been living vegan for three years now and is feeling great like me!

For me becoming vegan was the best decision of my life and I hope that I will live to see it becoming “normal”. So if you haven´t tried it #govegan  – at least give it a try for a month and you see how good it makes you feel!

As you might know by now I love food. I love cooking, baking, eating, and drawing food. When I entered the #100dayproject challenge this year I didn´t have to think very long about what I want to do as a project – of course I wanted to draw food! Now I am almost done with my 100 sketches and I must say I feel that I have improved my skills. So if you want to become better or an expert in a certain field, practice it for 100 days and you will feel an impact.

Vegan Travelling: Fulda

Fulda is a beautiful Barock city in the middle of Germany, I have been there tree times by now – every time in order to watch one of their exquisit musical productions. I saw “Die Päpstin”, “Friedrich”, and this time it was the musical adaption of “Der Medicus” (Noah Gordon´s The Physician).

Last Friday I went to Fulda by train which was convenient and fast, poor Debbie who I met there wasn´t so lucky, she missed a couple of connections due to a delay of her train, but in the end she also made it.

As we were very hungry from the long travel we started our culinary adventures and went to an Italian restaurant in the pedestrian area. In fact Fulda looks pretty much Italian with lots of palm trees, Italian restaurants and boutiques. We had some lovely Bruschetta con spinaci (yummy with lots and lots of garlic) and pasta arrabbiata.

Then we went to our hotel where we checked into our lovely huge room high above the city.

In the afternoon we had a look around the beautiful city and – of course – went hungry again.

This time we went to the trendy Viva Havanna bar opposite the castle. Cocktail time! The cocktails were amazing and really strong! We also had nachos with guacamole dip – always a most welcome snack!

After that it was time for the musical. It was indeed awesome! Sabrina Weckerlin is amazing in any role and so she was in this one, and the dancers were a sight to see. The musical was a good mixture between history and entertainment –  and with its lush costumes and decorations a true competitor for Disney´s Aladdin.

The next morning we had breakfast in our hotel. I had told them beforehand that we would like vegan breakfast and we weren´t disappointed! Beside the usual buffet there were different spreads, margarine, vegan cheese, and even some lupine desserts just for the two of us. What a nice start to the day!

Well-fed we continued our exploration of the city.

And then we found the most wonderful Café! A must for all vegans who visit Fulda!

First we had only some soy latte and a piece of vegan cake – but as it was such a comfortable place we had to come back later to try the soups and baguettes.

The rest of the day we spent having a look at all the shopping facilities in Fulda before we started our journey back to our homes. It had been a very nice – and very delicious –  weekend!

Vegan Travelling: Basingstoke and Salisbury

So we left Brighton on 19 June and continued our travels to Basingstoke. It was a very entertaining ride through narrow country roads and we had a lot of fun. 🙂

We arrived in Basingstoke rather late so all we could get to eat – after visiting a pub where they told us “We don´t do food anymore!” WHAT? – was some Indian take away called The Bengal Brasserie. The food was okay but not spectacular.

The next day began with shopping time at The Festival Place after a small breakfast at Starbucks where we got the very last vegan falafel wrap and a vanilla soy latte. Then it was finally time to meet our friends Dave, Wendy, and Nicola. When we lived in Basingstoke in 1999/2000 Debbie attended the Kempshot Junior School where she got to know Nic. Even though we had moved back to Germany after a year we have never stopped writing each other snail mail on occasions like birthdays and christmas. 🙂

We met at wagamama and were treated to a very delicious vegan meal indeed! Thank you very much, Dave!

It was the evening of the summer solstice and we were lucky enough to see the elusive strawberry moon from the terrace of our hotel!

After good night´s sleep we had a lovely breakfast at the hotel, we could choose from the full English vegetarian breakfast or continental options. I especially enjoyed the fruit salad and berries.IMG_3978

We spent the day visiting Old Sarum castle and the beautiful city of Salisbury.

Foodwise they weren´t so many options so we went to a Sainsbury´s supermarket and got some fresh mangos, carrots, bread, salsa, and hummus. Mmmh, delicious!

After that it was time to watch the German Mannschaft win another Euro match and take a nice walk through the adjacent poppy fields.IMG_4015

On 22 June we decided to visit the New Forest where we expected to see lots of wild donkeys but instead we saw only a lot of these signs.

Vegan food options seem not to be part of the menu at local pubs and restaurants.

We went back to Salisbury and could find something to eat at Nando´s.

On Thursday it was back to Harwich but not without a last shopping stop at London Colney Fields Shopping park where we loaded the Mini full of delicious British food. It was so nice to be back in (sort of) London where there are lots and lots of vegan options.

The ferry took us safely back to Hoek van Holland from where we headed back to Germany.

Some last(ing) impressions

Next weekend we will be off to the beautiful barock city Fulda where we are going to watch “Der Medicus – das Musical”. See you next Tuesday!

Last week I went on holiday to my favourite country England with my eldest daughter Debbie.

We took the ferry from Hoek van Holland to Harwich which was really convenient. The restaurant on the ferry  offered vegan smoothies, pasta, and alpro desserts so we did not have to go hungry on board. We spent the eight hours watching tv, napping, or reading – a nice way to start the holidays. From Harwich we drove to Bolney where we stayed at the beautiful Hickstead Hotel for the night.

A very lovely hotel in the countryside which offers vegan options for breakfast.

On the second day it was off to Brighton. We were very lucky because my designer friend Raynor offered to park our car at her place and went with us to Brighton where she showed us all the main attractions!

There were lots of cafés and restaurants which offer vegan food. We had coffee at the Loving Hut

I had the supercharged salad which was very nice indeed and very filling too, containing lots of seeds. The nicest part was that I had ordered a Virgin Mary drink with my salad and although the place was packed at a Sunday the waitress came back and said that the Virgin Mary would contain fish sauce and if I would like to choose something else instead- which I did – and I hadn´t even specifically explained that I am a vegan! What a great service! 🙂

While we were walking towards the Mexican restaurant we heard somebody singing and it sounded like the well-known singer Passenger – when we got closer we realised it was actually him giving a street concert! How amazing!IMG_3053

So I can strongly recommend visiting Brighton, lots of nice people, shops, restaurants, art, and – of course, seagulls!

It´s May – time for entertainment and events

For the last six months I have been busy setting up my creative business. I took lots of classes, spent millions of hours in front of the computer in order to learn Adobe Illustrator, created dozens of designs, and now it is time to put it all out into the universe (meaning to you, my customers).

The first event coming up is the “Koffermarkt” (suitcase market) in Oldenburg which will take place next Saturday (7 May 2016). In the lovely scenery of the local theatre Susi´s Cauldron (that´s me) will sell greeting cards, mugs, throw pillows, pouches, mousepads, fabrics, bags, etc. directly out of an old vintage suitcase.

One week later there will be a revival of the little Vegan Café in our garden. My daughter Debbie and me are going to treat you with lots of delicious cakes, muffins, brownies, sandwiches, etc. Let´s hope the weather will be nice for that occasion.

On 15 May I will be at another garden event (Tag des offenen Gartens), this time at the wonderful garden of Dörte Wemken and her family in Bad Zwischenahn. I can truly recommend you to come there as you will be delighted to see her beautiful plants and animals. Susi´s Cauldron will be there among other artists to promote their products and artworks. Some of the photographs I took there last year were turned into greeting cards or other items.

This is where the garden event will take place!

On 22 May I am going to teach a Chakra Meditation workshop at the Home of Yoga in Rastede, there are still some spaces left.
