The Story of Birdy

The Story of Birdy

This week there has been a challenge on the Make Art That Sells blog.

Advertising her new children´s book illustration class Lilla Rogers handed out a five part task in which you had to design the character of Birdy, a little girl, create a setting, play with scale, and finally place the character into the setting. These are my results.

It was a lot of fun creating these pictures and I would love to do more children´s book illustrations in the future.

Have a lovely weekend!

November dreams

November dreams

fullsizeoutput_6f2f

Today we were greeted with the first snow of the upcoming winter season. Although the arrival of snowy weather  almost always gives me migraines I tend to find snow very calming and  soothing. The blanket over the earth enables us to look inside rather than outside and search for our deepest wishes and hopes for the next year to come.

At the moment I am taking the e-course “Do what you love” by the amazing Beth Kempton and she teaches us to dream big and visualise your future as detailed as possible in order to bring your dreams into reality. If you want to change your life for the better I can honestly recommend taking this course as it offers you tools to detect your desires and shows you ways to implement them. Also the online community is incredibly supportive and I found a couple of lovely new friends there.

Do what you love

What are your goals for 2017? Do you want to be more loved and respected, do you want to get better paid for your work, or do you want to quit your job and start your own business? Now is the time to do some serious planning ahead. Write everything down, make lists of what you want to change, what to want to keep. Map out your future and send your wishes to the universe. Making positive wishes for everybody in your life will transform the reality and soon you will be living the dream.

I started this year by making lists of want I want to achieve, where I would like to go to, negative things I would like to get rid of, etc. And I must say, most of it has already come true because I had visualised it very clearly before.

Now I am planning to put all my knowledge of visualisation into a brand new workshop that I am going to offer in early 2017. The workshop will contain elements of yoga and chakra meditation as well as encouragement training and mindfulness tools.

Artistically I am working on more recipe illustrations for They draw and cook. I love to come up with new vegan or veganized recipes and am grateful for having to possibility to show them to the world via this fantastic website.

How to make Turkish Pizza the vegan way

There will also be another exhibition of my yoga / meditation paintings in my hometown Oldenburg in early 2017. More details coming soon.

Last but now least I would like to inform you about my new yoga courses which will start in January. There will be a course for beginners on Tuesday nights and an open class on Sunday afternoons. You can find more details on

My website

I hope all your November dreams will come true, don´t forget to make a wish on 14 November when there is a potent full moon in Taurus.

Namaste!

Spring into Summer

Spring into Summer

Hello SummerPINK

Amazing, it is June  – which means almost half of 2016 is already over and gone! What have you been up to so far? Have you reached any of your goals for this year yet? Have any dreams come true? Well, I certainly hope so. And if you think nothing has happened so far, think again, maybe you can come up with some seemingly minor achievements which may be a step on the way to success!

What have I done so far? For example I have graduated from the course “The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design – Module 2” which wasn´t only an excellent learning experience in terms of branding but also brought me closer to my tribe, I am getting to know more and more other creative beings who love the same things as I do – and I am very happy and grateful for that.

If you are interested in these kind of courses take a look here

Of course I also came up with a couple of new patterns:EarthedcolectionSheet.jpg

Then there is MATS Bootcamp. Another highly recommendable course for aspiring designers and illustrators. From March to July you get a monthly theme and are able to improve your skills and expand your portfolio working on it.

With 500 participants you will find a lot of talent in the bootcamp community which can be intimidating but if you concentrate on yourself and on your skills it is a magnificent experience! Three things I have learned in bootcamp so far:

  1. Stay true to yourself and your style – trying to compare yourself to someone else will get you nowhere.
  2. Stay open to new experiences – trying a new medium or techniques you haven´t done in ages may bring new joy to your work.
  3. Stay happy – even if you have a lot of work and other stuff going on let making art be your happy place. Enjoy sketching in the sun, if somebody made you angry paint a funny picture of that somebody and you will keep your joy.

Additionally I am taking part in a couple of challenges:

The #100daysproject on Instagram where I produce 100 food illustrations.

#susisveganfoodillustrations

Louise Gale´s beautiful Global Art Swap where you send postcards with positive notes to other participants from all over the world. I received very beautiful inspiring cards from the UK, and the USA.

Learn more about it here:

And last but not least – “Erfolgreich.Illustrator” formerly Fritzflock by Johanna Fritz – a very nice community of ambitious artists where you can take part in a weekly illustration challenge.

Hier geht es zur Facebook Gruppe

So I hope you enjoyed my news and found something for you in it. See you soon!

it is another busy week with lots of creative assignments for the courses I am currently taking. I am going to tell you more about these courses in one of my next posts. Today is Ascension day that is a holiday in Germany so I had the day off and could enjoy the lovely Spring weather. After a  topless shopping trip to Bad Zwischenahn with my Mini Cooper Convertible and a short visit at my parents´house (it is Father´s day in Germany) I took some photographs in my garden. The apple tree has just started to go into bloom and the cherry tree is still a sight to see so the choice of motifs wasn´t too hard.

Recently I have been very lucky not only have I won access to three fantastic mandala courses by Louise Gale

Please have a look at Louise´s courses here 🙂

but I was also gifted with a very interesting photo course by my lovely “Make it in design” classmate Pat Foltz.

Find Pat on IG here

I haven´t had time to go through all of the amazing content of the course

“The Art of seeing”

so far but I had a glimpse and I tried to let this spark flow into my photography today.

These are the results:

That is all for today! Enjoy this lovely May evening! See ya! x

It´s May – time for entertainment and events

It´s May – time for entertainment and events

For the last six months I have been busy setting up my creative business. I took lots of classes, spent millions of hours in front of the computer in order to learn Adobe Illustrator, created dozens of designs, and now it is time to put it all out into the universe (meaning to you, my customers).

The first event coming up is the “Koffermarkt” (suitcase market) in Oldenburg which will take place next Saturday (7 May 2016). In the lovely scenery of the local theatre Susi´s Cauldron (that´s me) will sell greeting cards, mugs, throw pillows, pouches, mousepads, fabrics, bags, etc. directly out of an old vintage suitcase.

One week later there will be a revival of the little Vegan Café in our garden. My daughter Debbie and me are going to treat you with lots of delicious cakes, muffins, brownies, sandwiches, etc. Let´s hope the weather will be nice for that occasion.

IMG_0145

On 15 May I will be at another garden event (Tag des offenen Gartens), this time at the wonderful garden of Dörte Wemken and her family in Bad Zwischenahn. I can truly recommend you to come there as you will be delighted to see her beautiful plants and animals. Susi´s Cauldron will be there among other artists to promote their products and artworks. Some of the photographs I took there last year were turned into greeting cards or other items.

This is where the garden event will take place!

On 22 May I am going to teach a Chakra Meditation workshop at the Home of Yoga in Rastede, there are still some spaces left.

In case you like food illustrations please have a look at my Instagram page as I am taking part in the #100dayproject for which I chose to draw what I eat everyday. You can find my illustrations  using the hashtag #susisveganfoodillustrations

Whatever you do – have a great May and try to get a lot of sunshine!

January 2016

January 2016

So that was January 2016 – and it just flew by .. What did I do this January?

For one thing I attended Louise Gale´s inspiring course “Big dreams, small wonders” and I must say the small wonders are beginning to happen for me!

For this year I set my focus on SUCCESS

IMG_0013My word of the year 2016 is Success.

Then I joined the #fritziflock – another very inspiring community of creative beings. Each week you will get a bird-related theme and on #fritzifriday you can share your artwork via fb or IG. Here one of my works:

IMG_0317.JPG

As a result of my wish to be successful as a designer in 2016 I got a couple of features.

First on redbubble for my “Sushi -licious” pattern design.

Then I was featured on the “Make it in design” blog with one of the pattern I submitted in  the ” Art & Business of Surface Pattern Design”  Module 1. it feels a bit old-fashioned now but still ..

Susi Sanlier - Spice up

Oh yes, I changed my Logo – again! Now it looks like this:

SCGOLD

Hope you like it!

I also got featured for my work on the  #52weeksofnature  challenge by Louise Gale.

Here is the pattern I came up with for “Leaves” week:

The last feature is very special because it is a double feature in the Uppercase Magazine newsletter I am very proud of:

And last but not least my portfolio site is online now:

I guess I am very grateful for all that happened in January and I can´t wait to see how February goes! Hope you were able to enjoy your first month of the year 2016 as well. Tomorrow I am going to celebrate Imbolg or the day of the Goddess Brighid, good night! x

Goodbye 2015

Goodbye 2015

We have reached the end of the year 2015, and how fast it has rushed by…

For me 2015 was a good year, a year I will remember.

I started the year by taking the course “30 days of grace” by Alena Hennessy which was truly inspiring. It was a great way to begin the new year in a creative way.

IMG_2101

Jobwise the year started busy and it has stayed busy till the end. Being a freelance teacher for English, Yoga, and Chakra Meditation that is what you want. I taught yoga to people between 11 and 73 years, to men and women of all sorts of backgrounds, as well as to migrant women from Turkey, Russia, and Iran. I started to teach English at the local Centre for Adult Education (Kreisvolkshochschule) which I enjoy a lot.

In April and June I visited a further yoga training called “Yoga Dancing” in Melle and I graduated with the title “Yoga Dancing Instructor”. The course was very nice and I made some lovely new friends.

In summer I took part in the “Make it in Design” summer school and that was a very wise decision. I had a lot of fun drawing and designing and therefore I decided to take more courses in the field of pattern design.

In September I started the course “Designing your way” again by MiiD and that opened up a whole new world for me. As a teenager I always wanted to become a designer – and now 30 years later it might still be possible! How amazing! Again I made some awesome new friends from all over the world.

With the help of “Skillshare” courses which I highly recommend  I created my own logo for my new creative identity as “Susi´s Cauldron” and opened up online shops on Spoonflower, Society 6, and Redbubble.

Please have a look

KesselsusisCauldron.jpg

In November I held my very first art exhibition at the lovely yoga studio “Home of Yoga” in Rastede and there are plans for further exhibitions in 2016. herbstlichti

So all in all it was a very successful year for me! I even sell some products in the local Ausstellwerk 95 in Oldenburg where artist can present their work.

I am very grateful for everything especially for all my students – even if I am the teacher I can learn so much from working with you! Let´s continue the good work in 2016.

I would like to wish all of you a pleasant start to an exciting new year with lots of new ideas, insights, and laughter.

Namaste!

Make it in Design Summer school

Make it in Design Summer school

Last month I took part in the Miidsummerschool for the first time, and I totally loved it! You sign up for four weeks of designing and you can learn so much about patterns, colour schemes, new trends to come, it was truly amazing.

It was impossible for me as a total beginner to compete with all these brilliant experienced designers who attended the course as well but they were all very kind, encouraging, and helpful.

As a result I signed up for Module 1 of the Make it in Design courses which will start in September. I can´t wait to start ..  If you like to create your own patterns, maybe you´d like to join me! Here are some of the designs I came with up during summer school.
