The Story of Birdy

The Story of Birdy

This week there has been a challenge on the Make Art That Sells blog.

Advertising her new children´s book illustration class Lilla Rogers handed out a five part task in which you had to design the character of Birdy, a little girl, create a setting, play with scale, and finally place the character into the setting. These are my results.

It was a lot of fun creating these pictures and I would love to do more children´s book illustrations in the future.

Have a lovely weekend!

Tree Affirmation Cards

Tree Affirmation Cards

img20161230_13573452Between the years I participated for the first time in the “Woman Unleashed Online Retreat” by the wonderful Amber Kuileimailani Bonnici. It is a free retreat where you can watch lots of amazing lessons ranging from Art via cooking classes to beautiful meditations.

Woman Unleashed Retreat

One of these lessons war hosted by the inspiring Alena Hennessey whose art classes are always brillant. The picture which evolved after that lesson is the one you can see above: The oak tree.

After I finished that picture I drew some more trees, the willow, the birch, the maple, and then I thought I should turn them into a series of affirmation cards which represent the chakras.

So here they are:

Namaste! May the new year 2017 bring you lots of happiness and prosperity!

November dreams

November dreams

fullsizeoutput_6f2f

Today we were greeted with the first snow of the upcoming winter season. Although the arrival of snowy weather  almost always gives me migraines I tend to find snow very calming and  soothing. The blanket over the earth enables us to look inside rather than outside and search for our deepest wishes and hopes for the next year to come.

At the moment I am taking the e-course “Do what you love” by the amazing Beth Kempton and she teaches us to dream big and visualise your future as detailed as possible in order to bring your dreams into reality. If you want to change your life for the better I can honestly recommend taking this course as it offers you tools to detect your desires and shows you ways to implement them. Also the online community is incredibly supportive and I found a couple of lovely new friends there.

Do what you love

What are your goals for 2017? Do you want to be more loved and respected, do you want to get better paid for your work, or do you want to quit your job and start your own business? Now is the time to do some serious planning ahead. Write everything down, make lists of what you want to change, what to want to keep. Map out your future and send your wishes to the universe. Making positive wishes for everybody in your life will transform the reality and soon you will be living the dream.

I started this year by making lists of want I want to achieve, where I would like to go to, negative things I would like to get rid of, etc. And I must say, most of it has already come true because I had visualised it very clearly before.

Now I am planning to put all my knowledge of visualisation into a brand new workshop that I am going to offer in early 2017. The workshop will contain elements of yoga and chakra meditation as well as encouragement training and mindfulness tools.

Artistically I am working on more recipe illustrations for They draw and cook. I love to come up with new vegan or veganized recipes and am grateful for having to possibility to show them to the world via this fantastic website.

There will also be another exhibition of my yoga / meditation paintings in my hometown Oldenburg in early 2017. More details coming soon.

Last but now least I would like to inform you about my new yoga courses which will start in January. There will be a course for beginners on Tuesday nights and an open class on Sunday afternoons. You can find more details on

My website

I hope all your November dreams will come true, don´t forget to make a wish on 14 November when there is a potent full moon in Taurus.

Namaste!

October Goals

October Goals

Another year of life has ended, a new one just begun .. For me that is a good time to think about what you achieved in the past year and – much more important – what your goals for the next year are.

Of course it is my aim to become a full time artist and make a living just by doing what I love but that takes a lot of focus and hard work. I have now been working as a freelancer for exactly 20 years with my translation/ tuition business so I know what I am talking about. But I am definitely willing to commit to some hard work and that is why I am taking lots of online courses in order to become the best me I can be.

At the moment I am taking the very enjoyable “Ever After 2016” course by Willowing. In this course you learn a lot of different mixed media techniques by a couple of high class artists. The topic is fairy tales and you get twelve different lessons so in the end you could fill a whole calendar with your paintings. I have already shown you some of my creations in my last blog post, today I can show you my version of the “Frog Prince” 🙂

Willowing

Next Monday the “Do what you love” course by Beth Kempton will start and I am very much looking forward to that because the course focuses on lots of different areas of your life and you can learn a lot about yourself and your hidden possibilities. Maybe you need to clear out your closets at home and get rid of all the unwanted clutter before you are able become a successful business woman. These kind of courses always inspire me a lot and I tend to find solutions for minor problems. I will let you know about my progress.

do what you love

What else am I working on at the moment? I am still working on my vegan recipe illustrations for “They draw and cook” and am always happy when they add my works to their website. This was the last one that was added.

CURRY1.jpg

So my creative goals are to make the most of my courses, to learn a lot, and to improve my style.

Of course I also want to become the best version of myself possible so I decided to do a three week detox challenge with my good friend Marion. I will tell you about the outcome in November. My plan is to improve my acid-base balance and to exercise a lot. So in addition to the four yoga classes I already teach per week I will invest some time in extra lessons for myself. Hopefully my cunning plan will work out fine. The detox of the body is supposed to clear the mind as well and thus give me the chance to see where I can up my game.

What are your October goals? Please tell me in the comments! I hope you enjoyed this blog post and could find something for you in it! See you soon!

Illustrating recipes

Illustrating recipes

As you might know by now I love food. I love cooking, baking, eating, and drawing food. When I entered the #100dayproject challenge this year I didn´t have to think very long about what I want to do as a project – of course I wanted to draw food! Now I am almost done with my 100 sketches and I must say I feel that I have improved my skills. So if you want to become better or an expert in a certain field, practice it for 100 days and you will feel an impact.

You can find my food sketches on Instagram searching for #susisveganfoodillustrations

Now that I have sketched so many foods, the next obvious step for me is to illustrate recipes. So I was very happy when the very talented Ohn Mar Win introduced her skillshare course: Food Illustration-

Design your favourite fruity recipe

Once you know how to do the recipe cards there is no stopping. I have already created a handful of them and even submitted some to the inspiring

They draw and cook Website

If you like drawing food or illustrating recipes why not start a project today.

Happy creating! Remember: Everything starts with a simple sketch. And with PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE you will get better!

Update: Now you can find my recipes on the They draw and cook website, too! Yay!

My Creative Summer 2016

My Creative Summer 2016

veganVicuna3

It´s July – that means summer, holidays, free time, sitting outside, having fun with friends, etc. But July is almost over and there is only one week of holidays left before it will be back to school or work for us here in Lower Saxony, Germany. So you already know all about my trips to England and Fulda but what else did I do during this precious time?

Well, I painted, sketched, illustrated, created, etc., you name it.

For the past four months I took part in the MATS (Make art that sells) Bootcamp 2016  where you get an assignment every month and you can create a piece which fits the theme in your own style. There were more than 500 participants and my Facebook feed contained a lot of eye-candy from all these talented designers who were part of the group. The trendy themes of the assignments were: colouring book, ornaments, tarot cards, children´s books, and a journal cover. It was fun to work on all of these very different topics.

Find all MATS courses here

Another thing which is still going on for me is the #100dayproject on Instagram.

I chose to do 100 Food Illustrations in order to improve my skills in that area and I think it has helped me a lot. You can find all my sketches on IG with #susisveganfoodillustrations

Then there have been two courses which started on 1 July:

The 30 days portfolio challenge by the German Illustrator  Johanna Fritz is a great opportunity to create more illustrations for your portfolio. Johanna #byjohannafritz #erfolgreichillustrator is a great teacher and she gave us four weekly assignments, including a greeting card, an editorial, a pattern, and a fairytale book cover. It was a nice challenge and again I learned a lot (although there is still so much more to learn).

Portfolio challenge

The other course I am attending at the moment is “Ever after” by Willowing

Ever After 2016

The mixed media course runs over a period of four months and involves twelve fairy tale lessons by different teachers. In July we learned about Snow-white, The little Mermaid, and Beauty & the Beast. I am very much looking forward to the next three lessons in August.

Then there was the Global HeART swap organised by Louise Gale.

Global Art Swap

You get three addresses, create an artwork on a postcard-sized paper or cardboard for each recipient and send them off. In return you will get three beautiful postcards from strangers from all over the world who are sending you their art  accompanied by positive wishes. I took part for the second time and this time the theme was:

Love & Light

I guess that is about it. In August it will continue with the Global  Talent Search and the Make it in Design Summer School.

Summer School

I hope you enjoyed hearing about my creative ventures, next time more Vegan Travelling!

Spring into Summer

Spring into Summer

Hello SummerPINK

Amazing, it is June  – which means almost half of 2016 is already over and gone! What have you been up to so far? Have you reached any of your goals for this year yet? Have any dreams come true? Well, I certainly hope so. And if you think nothing has happened so far, think again, maybe you can come up with some seemingly minor achievements which may be a step on the way to success!

What have I done so far? For example I have graduated from the course “The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design – Module 2” which wasn´t only an excellent learning experience in terms of branding but also brought me closer to my tribe, I am getting to know more and more other creative beings who love the same things as I do – and I am very happy and grateful for that.

If you are interested in these kind of courses take a look here

Of course I also came up with a couple of new patterns:EarthedcolectionSheet.jpg

Then there is MATS Bootcamp. Another highly recommendable course for aspiring designers and illustrators. From March to July you get a monthly theme and are able to improve your skills and expand your portfolio working on it.

With 500 participants you will find a lot of talent in the bootcamp community which can be intimidating but if you concentrate on yourself and on your skills it is a magnificent experience! Three things I have learned in bootcamp so far:

  1. Stay true to yourself and your style – trying to compare yourself to someone else will get you nowhere.
  2. Stay open to new experiences – trying a new medium or techniques you haven´t done in ages may bring new joy to your work.
  3. Stay happy – even if you have a lot of work and other stuff going on let making art be your happy place. Enjoy sketching in the sun, if somebody made you angry paint a funny picture of that somebody and you will keep your joy.

Additionally I am taking part in a couple of challenges:

The #100daysproject on Instagram where I produce 100 food illustrations.

#susisveganfoodillustrations

Louise Gale´s beautiful Global Art Swap where you send postcards with positive notes to other participants from all over the world. I received very beautiful inspiring cards from the UK, and the USA.

Learn more about it here:

And last but not least – “Erfolgreich.Illustrator” formerly Fritzflock by Johanna Fritz – a very nice community of ambitious artists where you can take part in a weekly illustration challenge.

So I hope you enjoyed my news and found something for you in it. See you soon!

January 2016

January 2016

So that was January 2016 – and it just flew by .. What did I do this January?

For one thing I attended Louise Gale´s inspiring course “Big dreams, small wonders” and I must say the small wonders are beginning to happen for me!

For this year I set my focus on SUCCESS

IMG_0013My word of the year 2016 is Success.

Then I joined the #fritziflock – another very inspiring community of creative beings. Each week you will get a bird-related theme and on #fritzifriday you can share your artwork via fb or IG. Here one of my works:

IMG_0317.JPG

As a result of my wish to be successful as a designer in 2016 I got a couple of features.

First on redbubble for my “Sushi -licious” pattern design.

Sushi-licous

Then I was featured on the “Make it in design” blog with one of the pattern I submitted in  the ” Art & Business of Surface Pattern Design”  Module 1. it feels a bit old-fashioned now but still ..

Susi Sanlier - Spice up

Oh yes, I changed my Logo – again! Now it looks like this:

SCGOLD

Hope you like it!

I also got featured for my work on the  #52weeksofnature  challenge by Louise Gale.

Here is the pattern I came up with for “Leaves” week:

The last feature is very special because it is a double feature in the Uppercase Magazine newsletter I am very proud of:

And last but not least my portfolio site is online now:

I guess I am very grateful for all that happened in January and I can´t wait to see how February goes! Hope you were able to enjoy your first month of the year 2016 as well. Tomorrow I am going to celebrate Imbolg or the day of the Goddess Brighid, good night! x
